The physicians, residents, faculty, and staff of St. Vincent’s Family Medicine and Residency Center have encouraged passionate engagement with reading by distributing more than 15,000 age and language appropriate books to disadvantaged children. More than that, the physicians actually teach pre-reading skills to the parents who are often non-readers themselves.
St. Vincent’s Momentum is a community based pediatric intervention program designed to prevent and treat pediatric obesity and comorbid conditions including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and osteoarthritis. In compliance with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations for treatment, this multidimensional program consists of nutritional, behavioral, and exercise components which empower youth to live healthier lives.
The Program: Many organizations, including St. Vincent’s, support global mission trips that provide free medical care to the underserved around the world. But there are an estimated 3,000 people right here in Jacksonville that are homeless, and many others who face significant barriers to receiving healthcare. There are numerous support groups for individuals facing a cancer challenge, but there has never been a program for the children of parents, grandparents, or caregivers who were facing cancer, until now. Kids Together Against Cancer (KTAC) is a free support program that helps the children of parents that are facing a cancer diagnosis, regardless of where their parents seek treatment. This compassionate, life altering program began in 2009 and remains the only program of its kind in Jacksonville.
