St. Vincent’s Momentum is a community based pediatric intervention program designed to prevent and treat pediatric obesity and comorbid conditions including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and osteoarthritis. In compliance with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations for treatment, this multidimensional program consists of nutritional, behavioral, and exercise components which empower youth to live healthier lives.
Who We Have Helped:
One parent told us, “Momentum has had an incredibly positive impact on my son’s overall health and development this past year. After three hip surgeries, two heart surgeries, and a few years in and out of double leg braces, wheelchairs, and walkers, my son had become an emotional eater and was struggling to regain healthy habits, get his weight back down, and have a good self-image. He was just getting cleared for full participation in all physical activities again when Momentum started at his school. We had made some good progress the summer before and hoped that the program would keep it going, but wondered how enthusiastic he would remain when the newness wore off and the exercises got more challenging. My son, however, thrived! Momentum is the right name for this program because as my son saw himself improving physically and experienced how satisfying it felt to work-out. It provided the motivation for him to begin self-monitoring his eating and physical activity and seeking healthy options on his own. We had been trying to accomplish this at a family level, but the consistency, competition, and fun of Momentum provided an impetus that we had not been able to find. The combination of intense physical activity, social interaction, encouragement, and healthy rivalry is exactly what my son needed and I believe it has played a very large part in shaping his mindset into a healthy one that he will now carry into the years ahead. Please don’t ever stop this program!”
